“Pennum Porattum” is an Indian Malayalam-language social satire set in the fictional village of Pattada, where the residents have long maintained peace by giving up violence. When a private conversation between a young woman named Charulatha and Kumar is leaked through community WhatsApp groups, the village descends into a frenzy of moral policing and public shaming. At the same time, Baburaj’s pet dog Suttu escapes and is wrongly branded as rabid, leading to a chaotic manhunt. As these two parallel pursuits unfold, the film uses humour and escalating chaos to explore mob mentality, moral policing, hypocrisy, and the tendency of communities to turn rumours into unquestioned truth. Parts of the story are also told from Suttu’s perspective, offering a unique and thought-provoking look at the contrast between human behaviour and animal innocence.
